Linear Precoding Designs for Amplify-and-Forward MIMO Two-Way Relay Networks

Two-way relaying has demonstrated significant gain in spectral efficiency by applying network coding in cooperative communications. The multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technique, on the other hand, offers tremendous capacity gain in wireless communications. Incorporating the MIMO technique into two-way relaying is expected to further increase the system throughput. To fully realize the benefits of MIMO and two-way relaying, it is crucial to design properly the transceiver or precoder at each multi-antenna node, especially at the relay node. In this talk, I will present our recent work on the joint design of linear source and relay precodings in amplify-and-forward MIMO two-way relay networks. Both single-pair and multi-pair two-way relaying will be considered. We show that these problems are all non-convex and the globally optimal solutions remain open. We shall provide several algorithms to achieve good tradeoff between performance and complexity.
